Obituary

Alice Faye Shook Stamey, age 77, of Kay Willa Lane in Spruce Pine, passed away Sunday,

September 6, 2026 at The Green’s of Spruce Pine.

She was the ninth child of the late Charles and Ebbie Greene Shook. She was preceded in

death by her husband, Carroll Stamey who passed away in 1989. Carroll’s passing left her a

widow at the age of thirty-nine. They were devoted to one another and he was the love of her

life. She was also preceded in death by her brothers; Joe, Rob, Jack and Harry and her

sisters; Mary Sue and Betty.

Alice was a lifelong member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. It was an important part of

her life and she considered the church members as her family. She graduated from Cranberry

High School and graduated from Mayland Community College with honors. She worked in

furniture plants until their closing. She then found her true calling and worked until her

retirement at Phillips-Gwaltney Child Development Center. She was never happier than when

she was taking care of children. She was quiet and shy with a true mother’s heart and children

loved her.

Left to cherish her memories are her sisters; Barbara Buchanan of Spruce Pine and Florence

Dellinger of Spear and her sister-in-law; Frances Shook of Spruce Pine. While she and Carroll

didn’t have children, her nieces Rebecca Buchanan, Donna Staton and Elizabeth Blair

considered her an extra Mom and her great niece, Katherine Blair viewed her as a bonus

granny. She made her home with Rebecca who was a loving caregiver. She is also survived by

many nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly.

The funeral service for Alice Stamey will be on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 2:00 pm at

Yellow Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Dustin Dellinger officiating. Interment will be in

the Big Meadows Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday,

September 9, 2026 from 1:00 pm until 2;00 pm at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to Hospice and Palliative Care of the

Blue Ridge and The Green’s of Spruce Pine for the excellent care they gave to Alice.
