A rainbow is truly a rare occurrence. It appears only when the light, the rain, and the moment are all perfectly aligned. You have to be in the right place at the right time to witness the beauty of all those colors stretched across the sky. Gail was a rainbow. She was rare, unforgettable, and beautiful in a way that could never be measured by appearance alone. Her colors never dimmed. No matter what storms she faced, she continued to shine, and when people were lucky enough to be around her, her light seemed to reflect upon their souls.

On a cool March morning, Heaven bestowed a precious gift upon Earth. On March 8, 1945, Linda Gail Nelson was born. The name Gail comes from Hebrew and means “joy,” “exultation,” or “leaping for joy.” There could not have been a more fitting name for her. Gail was joy in human form. She carried happiness with her wherever she went, and somehow, even in the hardest moments, she had a way of making the people around her smile. Anyone who knew Gail for even five minutes could walk away feeling an immense sense of joy, along with the understanding that the Lord never does anything without a purpose and that every life is precious. There were many times in Gail’s life when she could have given up. Doctors once said she would not live to see the age of 21, but Gail had other plans. She faced every bit of adversity with her bright blue eyes, her gummy smile, and that stubbornness that became such a beloved part of who she was. She touched the hearts of many generations and had a personality that was simply unforgettable.

She loved her a good man—of course, Dean and Mark were among her favorites. She loved music, too, and a song with a good bass line could always bring out her laughter and that unmistakable smile. Thanks to Marena, there was always music in the house. And, of course, there was coffee. Gail loved her coffee, and it was about as much a part of her daily life as her laughter, her smile, and her spunk. But above all else, what she loved most was her “Dee Dee,” her “MaMa,” her Deena. The love between them was something special, the kind of love that cannot be explained with words but can be felt in every memory they shared. And now, we can picture Gail exactly where she belongs—sitting on a porch in Heaven, coffee in one hand and her favorite toy, Dobby, in the other, smoking a cigarette with Dean and Debbie, probably laughing, talking, and saying everything shes wanted to for the past 81 years. Maybe there is music playing in the background, maybe the coffee is always hot, and maybe, somewhere beyond that porch, there is a rainbow stretching across the sky. And if there is, we know Gail is probably responsible for making it a little brighter.

Many times, the paths of people's lives cross for a reason. Sometimes we meet someone for a season, sometimes for a lesson, and sometimes we are blessed enough to know someone whose presence changes us forever. When you are fortunate enough to have someone as special as Gail in your life, you begin to realize just how much people can take for granted. Gail reminded us that every life is precious. It does not matter what someone looks like, where they came from, or what their past may hold. We are all children of God, and we should treat one another with the same grace, kindness, and love that we hope to receive ourselves. Gail lived that lesson in her own way. She showed us that a person does not have to live a “normal” life to leave a beautiful legacy. Sometimes, a legacy is simply the laughter you leave behind, the memories people hold close, and the little pieces of yourself that continue living in the people you loved.

On October 7, 2026, Gail went to her forever home, where she can finally sing and dance freely. She no longer has to fight the storms of this world. Instead, she gets to stand beneath an endless sky, surrounded by the light and love of Heaven. And while we know there are tears today, we also know that Heaven gained someone who will make it even more joyful. There, rainbows will never fade, music will never stop, coffee will never run cold, and Gail's spirit will never grow dim. We can imagine her laughing, dancing, and being her wonderfully stubborn, spunky self, reminding everyone around her that she has arrived. Her earthly journey may have ended, but her story has not. Her spirit lives on in every person she touched, every laugh she shared, every song that reminds us of her, and every memory that makes us smile. We will carry her with us until the day we meet her again on that Golden Shore.

When you think of Gail and the memories you have shared with her, we ask that you do not remember her only with sadness or mourning. Instead, remember her the way she would want to be remembered—with joy, laughter, music, a cup of coffee, and a little bit of spunk. Remember her bright blue eyes. Remember her gummy smile. Remember her stubbornness, her laughter, and the way she could make an ordinary moment unforgettable. And when you see a rainbow after the rain, take a moment to look up. Perhaps it is Heaven reminding us that some colors never fade, some love never ends, and some people are simply too special to ever truly leave us.
